Opt-Out: Believe the DNC and Hillary – OR – John King, the Secretary of Education?

Hillary and John King OPT OUT.001

These are facts, not opinions.

Secretary of Education John King will financially penalize schools and districts when parents opt-out of high stakes standardized testing for their children. John King is appointed by President Obama.

The DNC and Hillary will guarantee the rights of parents opt-out of high stakes standardized tests with no penalty for children, parents, schools or teachers.

“Thanks to collaboration between Clinton and Sanders drafters and platform committee members, the public education plank in the Democratic platform represents a refreshing sea change in its approach to public education, to the students we serve, and to the parents and educators who work so hard to give all our children the opportunity they deserve.”

“We also support enabling parents to opt their children out of standardized tests without penalty for either the student or their school.” See the source and links HERE and HERE.

HOWEVER –

“U.S. Education Secretary John B. King is pushing for new regulations that would penalize schools where large numbers of students refuse to take the tests.” See one source HERE.

We are expected to believe two opposites. This causes serious cognitive dissonance.

Do we believe what was and is being done or what is promised during an election campaign?

(Please do not make comments that Donald Trump is a demon who has no education plank in his platform. That is a given. The subject is what to believe regarding the Democratic National Committee and their candidate, Hillary Clinton.)

  1. I don’t really trust either of them. But it won’t matter in a couple years because opt out will be impossible when the digital “personalized” learning empire takes over and the state assessment will be broken down into chunks as an “end of unit” test. Will parents be able to opt of that then? Will they even know kids are taking these tests? But all the mini-high-stakes tests will be used for competency-based education and data tracking, just in smaller doses. Even more dangerous, in my opinion.

I realize this is obvious, but campaign promises are traditionally empty, as are platform planks. There is nothing to make one think that this year’s are any different. What we can see on solid ground is history, i.e. already-done actions and non-actions of particular parties and individuals. Talk is cheap; lobbyists are not.

  3. Jim Horn says:

The platform means nothing; King is drafting regs based on the federal statute that Clinton, Ravitch, and the rest of the corporate union crowd supported along with the conservatives.

  4. If HRc is elected president and she keeps King, then we will know she stabbed every public school teacher in the country and all the students and parents that opt out if high stakes tests.

But if she dumps King and brings in a real educator that does not support the privatization movement, then the odds favor that she will deliver on what she said.

What choice do we Have? There will be no support for public education from Trump who will be a Constitutional wrecking ball. But we have a 50-50 chance with HRC.

Trump will destroy the entire republic. I don’t think HRC will do that no matter what she does to public education.

    • Jim Horn says:

You are grasping at straws, I think. Dumping King would mean as much as dumping Duncan, which is nothing. The privatization and anti-parent policies are in federal statute called ESSA, which Clinton and the rest of the neolib “anti-reformers” from AFT to FairTest to NEA to NPE all endorsed. I cannot speak for anyone but myself, but I plan to vote for Stein, whose education platform actually embraces the anti-corporate reform elements that Diane Ravitch supports, except when it matters.

      • I’d rather vote for Stein too if I thought it would help defeat Trump, but I think voting for Stein will take votes away from HRC and help Trump more. Therefore, I will vote for HRC hoping that my vote will keep Trump out of the White House. I’m not voting for HRC to put her in the White House. I’m voting for her to keep Trump out.
