The social contract is simple. “You take care of us. We take care of you.”
The new reality, we are being told, is more American, more rugged individualistic, new and improved, and here to stay. “You take care of us. We keep everything. Screw you.”
The lie is in the word “reality.”
“How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg.” – Abraham Lincoln
Calling greed the new social contract does not make it the reality. Calling the abandonment of the purpose and duties of a just rule of law (a government) by any other name does not create a new reality. Injustice is not justice for all. Unfairness is not fairness simply because a highly financed propaganda machine pays media and legislative leaders to call it something which it is not.
Refuse to believe the propaganda.
The Seal of the United States has our symbol, an eagle, bearing a ribbon with one phrase, “E pluribus unum.” Out of many, one. One out of many. One from many. All for one, and one for all. There is no mention of corporate or individual greed, no mention of the privileged few who are above the law, no mention of a royal or wealth power making a new reality as it takes all for itself.
The purpose of a democratic government is to meet the needs of its people.
Public schools meet the needs of our children. Social Security meets the needs of our elderly. Medicare and Medicaid meet the needs of our ill. America’s social services meet the needs of us all. We have many more social services that make America the country established with the goal of “of the people, for the people.” Our social services were never meant to create private wealth for multinational mega-corporations, tax free foundations, and under-taxed billionaires.
Reality: If New York is attacked, as it was on 9/11, the United States of America is attacked. If our social services are attacked, the United States of America is attacked. We must oppose all enemies – internal and external – who attempt to destroy our social contract.
Refuse to believe the propaganda. We need to work together on Labor Day and every day to strengthen the social contract.
